WCHA regular season champs once again!

5 Mar

Seems like it’s been forever since the last time the University of Minnesota men’s hockey team had any hardware to show for their season.  All that changed this past Saturday night.  For the first time since the 2006-2007 season, they are the regular season WCHA champions and will again have their name etched to the MacNaughton Cup, the trophy given to said champion.  It didn’t come easy, as it shouldn’t.  In the final regular season series, the Gophers were battling their border rivals from the University of Wisconsin.  After dropping Friday night’s contest 4-1, they spotted the Badgers a 1-0 lead on Saturday.  Erik Haula tied the game on a short handed goal, and then sophomore defenseman Nate Schmidt put them ahead for good on this spectacular play.  The Gophers will be the number one seed in the forthcoming post-season tournament for the WCHA and are in prime position for selection into the NCAA tournament…something else that has also eluded them the last several years.
